Many years ago I attended a workshop taught by Canadian potter Robin Hopper.
He was an artist who gave a lot of thought to the design and function of his pots.
I remember Robin holding up a mug and demonstrating six or seven different ways people hold a mug while they drink their cuppa. A handle needs to be formed thoughtfully to accommodate these individual styles.
Some people wrap both hands around the whole mug, Some want to fit their hand comfortably into the handle for a secure grip. A man often has larger fingers and squishing one finger into a tiny handle isn’t very satisfying.
Mugs are my favorite thing to make so this lesson really struck me. I still use that wisdom when I am forming handles, Strong and dependable, Roomy and accommodating, complimenting the shape of the mug.
I think a cuppa can be such a comforting moment in life’s whirl. A beautifully designed mug can add to the warmth.
