Artist Statement

Amy Wood is having a damn good time.

After years of staying inside the lines and following all the rules she has finally worked out there are no rules.

That deciding what matters and what kind of person you want to be is enough.

Amy’s art is lively and colourful and beginning to explore. There are so many fascinating pictures to make. Pictures of the quiet, of moments that rescue us from the craziness. Pictures of joy, of the colour and light that the world offers to lift us from dreariness. Finally, and most fascinatingly, pictures of people – with their hidden inner worlds and untold stories.

Pictures that can bridge the space

Pictures that can bridge the space between and connect us. Perhaps with the rise of prosperity, we need each other less, and yet it feels like we need connection more than ever. The internet has opened powerful education and connection opportunities. Amy feels that people connecting IRL is also huge and she hopes to use portraiture and learning to paint people from life as a way of connecting with fascinating people and their stories.

Drawing Every Day!

In an effort to become more fluent and able to tell a visual story well, Amy has challenged herself to draw every single day this year. It is beginning to pay dividends. If you do something every day, as you would walking the dog, cooking dinner, or putting your shoes on. It becomes less intimidating; no longer does it need to be “right” or wait for the right energy or motivation. It just needs to be done. Somehow the doing is practice that brings awareness and excitement of the many things that deserve to be made into pictures.
