Spring exploded colourfully this year. It didn’t frost and I was finally able to grow nasturtiums properly. They were a wild sea of gorgeous intense green, punctuated by iridescent reds, oranges, and yellows. In the middle of it all, the peach and nectarine trees blossomed spectacularly!
Irresistible!!
I painted the garden from both sides en plein air, working right there amongst the flowers.
Painting these flowers took a couple of days and it felt terrific. There is a different kind of noticing and gratitude when you sit and really look at the flowers. The beautiful colours. The way the breeze waves them. How graceful they are. The bees!!

I see these flowers as a fleeting opportunity, and I became a bit obsessed with making the most of it.
I have tried for 5 years to grow nasturtiums, sprinkling seed in places I thought they might like. This is the first year they have thrived so spectacularly.
As you can see from the many other nasturtium paintings in this exhibition, I let myself get carried away with the fun of them.
I painted nasturtiums in watercolour, drew them in graphite and on the iPad, captured them in oils and finally this created these large acrylics. It feels a bit mad and yet I can’t regret it!
ENJOY 😊
