I have often felt that trees—like the ocean—have such a huge steady presence. Next to them my own presence becomes reassuringly insignificant. I could stuff it all up and it wouldn’t even matter. The trees and ocean aren’t bothered by my personal foolishness or fabulousness.
I love that my home has a gully and creek, with beautiful big gum trees. Blue gums, knurled and aged. They are a favourite subject to paint.
It takes me a while to find my groove with a big painting like this—it’s intimidating. What if I stuff it up??!!
If the neighbours were watching they would have wondered what on earth I was doing— I would apply a little paint and then go and sit in the shade… Apply a little more paint and then go and lie in the shade looking up at the trees.
My procrastinating became part of this painting—all that dodging meant I was still and observant. Being still myself, I could see how much activity and life, was happening around me. The kookaburra waiting patiently – finally swooping, then flying up to a branch with his captured prey. The wrens flittering through, curious about what I was doing on their patch. And the butterflies! So many butterflies just soaring, soundlessly through the sunshine.
The leaves rustled by the wind. The pattern of the sunlight and shadow shifting and changing as the leaves shifted in the wind. When I finally did begin to paint with enthusiasm I wanted to try and put all those moments of peace onto the canvas. It helped me add a little playfulness in to the mix.
Can you spot the kookaburras?
